Cumnor lost the toss and were put in to bat - probably with a view to prolonging the game rather than bowling us out. Ian West stepped up to the mark to open the batting with Jack Metcalfe and soon found his form rattling the boundary boards 3 times in quick succession. He was surpsied however by a ball that kept a bit low and sliced the ball to cover point where 13 year old Matthew Warner took a fantastic tumbling catch at his feet. The prolific Metcalfe with an eye on another big score was also surprised by the same combination and again Warner took a diving catch leaving Cumnor on 28-2. By now Tony Munsey had his eye in and joined by debutant Dave Hewstone made light work of anything short pitched, but did manage to have us on the edge of our seats after a short ball was smashed into square legs hands only for it to drop to the floor. With this reprieve he set about the variable Kingston bowling attack with gusto bringing up his century in short time with a range of shots square of the wicket an in the "V" including one enormous straight six that almost cleared the road.

When Hewstone fell cheaply, another product of our Youth academy made his 3rd team debut, George Glew. Batting sensibly in a supportive role, Glew played some lovely shots through cover and extra cover and the declaration was delayed to enable him to make his maiden league 50 on his debut. Munsey was disappointed to be left on 154* (including 24 fours and 3 sixes) by the declaration as he had his eyes on a double hundred.

When Kingston batted skipper Bobby Bowerman claimed 2 early wickets both bowled, while Ali Lee bowled a succession of maidens from the other end without success. The Kingston batters had decided to dig in, but finally another straight ball thudding into the pads was rewarded with the umpires finger and this was quickly followed by 2 more- both victims of straight bowling aided by variable bounce. Bowerman was replaced by Anthony Shorter who finished with figures of 5-1-15-1 and bowled very tidily, but when he came off we had an all leg spin attack with 14 year olds James Lee and Ali Albasri,( making his debut) extracting some turn from a dusting wicket. Both bowled well and ended with figures of 5-2-5-2 and 8-1-15-1 respectively. There can't be many sides boasting 2 leg spinners - especially of that age. After Mick Phillips had an exploratory over Ali Lee returned to mop up his 30th League wicket of the season.
