Returning skipper Justin Bowerman had no hesitation asking Motors to bat first on a damp wicket at Wootton in overcast conditions. Mark Haigh bowled a good spell up the hill getting good movement and lift including one that spat off a length taking the edge and giving Dan Hill a sharp catch behind the stumps. Bowerman at the other end was bowling a mean spell with good swing and cut off the wicket picking up two wickets as the Motors batsmen lost patience and tried to force the pace. Young Tom Whitehead, brought in at short notice took a fine catch.
Ali Lee replaced Haigh from the bottom end and soon found a good line and length, and was rewarded in his second over with a wicket. 4 more were to follow thanks to some excellent fielding by Dave Mitty, Simon Howarth, a dolly caught and bowled and an lbw. This was the third "five-for" of the season for Lee, passing 20 wickets for the season in the process. Despite his miserly spell of 2-12 from 9 overs, Bowerman took himself off and brought on left arm spinner Simon Howarth, and might have regretted his decision as Howarth's second ball long hop was flat batted to mid-wicket for 6, but Howarth regained his composure and turned the screw enabling Lee to reap the reward at the other end.
After 30 overs the rain began to fall steadily and just before the players were forced from the field an excellent piece of fielding and throw to the bowlers end by Whitehead brought the 9th wicket. A good all round fielding performance was not rewarded by the victory it deserved after an early tea play was abandoned for the day.
