Cumnor 116 for 3 [20 overs]
Hambidge B, 50*, Salas 35*
Warner 3 for 20
Kingston Bagpuize won by 5 runs
Kingston Bagpuize won the toss and elected to bat. James and Foley L opened the bowling and bowled quick if rather expensive stuff, with a hefty contribution both from Warner and KB's invaluable 12th man, Extras, partly accounted for by the fact that we had only 10 men. Foley took 2 good wickets in his fourth over, both clean bowled, but nevertheless KB made good progress towards setting a testing target . Hammond and Hembrow staunched the flow of runs, Hammond being particularly tight and menacing, and Hembrow (of course) chipped in with his regulation 2 wickets. Later, Barnett and the younger Hambidge bowled some stuff that was pretty difficult to hit, and took a wicket each. Foley L took two very good catches, and Barnett once again showed the ability to turn the ball so much it was visible from the pavilion and in some cases from Cumnor (this was an away game). Foley C had some good and difficult takes behind the stumps to both the seamers and spinners, and Hammond prowled the infield athletically, delivering some quick and accurate returns over the stumps.
Cumnor got off to a poor start in which Hammond and James were dismissed cheaply, in James's case in a fashion which clearly produced some introspection and reflection from him afterwards, as you'd expect from a good captain. Foley played himself in and middled the ball well but then clipped one around the corner to short square leg who took a brilliant catch off his bootstraps. At this point most of the spectators gave up hope, and huge inroads were made into the jug of Pimm's thoughtfully supplied for the scorers by KB. Apparently it aids observation and clarity of handwriting....
There then ensued a thrilling run chase, building slowly to an unbearable conclusion - one of those situations where the only thing worse than watching was not watching. Hambidge batted quite beautifully, showing a straight bat and impeccable technique and Eladio smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. Though 51 were required off the last 5 overs, 12 were scored off the 16th to keep up the pressure. 22 were needed off the last over we ended up only 5 short of a tie. The pair were only separated by the scorers when Hambidge hit the magical 50 with two balls left to play. Finally, there was a brief and hilarious cameo from Salas and Khaitan who found themselves at the same end off the penultimate ball, but somehow managed to make their ground.
Apart from the stroke-making, the great feature of this partnership was the running between the wickets. In particular, in the latter part of the partnership, there were at least half a dozen singles which were made into 2s because each batsman made quick, intelligent calls, and showed great athleticism in making his ground.
The captaincy was very good throughout. Daniel had given a great deal of thought to both batting and bowling line-ups and arrived with a typed list and a typed diagramme of field placings! It was great that everyone had a part to play in this minor classic and for that the captain should take all the credit.
For men of the match I have two nominations.
Ben (Hambidge) and Eladio - jointly - for a wonderful partnership. While Ben scored more runs it was a true partnership and a hugely impressive one.
Varadh for bowling a tidy over, scampering well in the two balls he played, and fielding well, displaying a good arm. But most importantly, everything he did was done with impish good humour, and an ability to laugh at himself that we can all learn from.
Thanks to the whole team for a great evening, to Alistair Barnett for scoring and to Ben Barnett for letting us have his new ball (which I will replace). Commiserations to Kieran for missing it. Hope you're well soon Kieran.
Finally, a quick re-cap on team learning points for the next game
Things done well to do next time
Some great calling and running in tandem from Ben & Eladio
(Almost) chasing down a big total
Making sure everyone had an meaningful part in the action - Daniel
Consistently walking in
Some alert and athletic fielding (especially Miles, Luc, Conor)
Constant encouragement of the bowlers and fielding - captain and vice-captain - (though we could all learn from James (Lee!))
Things to work on
Being clear on when to set a deep fine leg / backstop
Not looking at the fielder when running your bat in. It's hard to run your fastest when your head is pointing in a different direction from your feet.
Always running the first run hard
Regards
Michael
