During season 2008 Cumnor Cricket Club provided coaching to more than 170 youngsters aged between 7 and 17 who attended our weekly coaching programme or our intensive week long summer academies, making us one of the leading providers in the county. Players of all standards are welcome, We put great emphasis on enjoyment and encourage all our members to play the game in the right spirit. We recognise that sport teaches valuable lessons and helps develop skills which are useful in other parts of life. Our pre season ‘captaincy’ course enabled senior players to pass on their knowledge to our young players and help them develop leadership skills during the season, and a number of our 16 and 17 years olds will be taking ECB coaching qualifications this winter to enable them to coach youngsters next year becoming more confident and responsible adults as a result. The club actively promotes junior sport within the community, organising the Vale District Under 10 Kwik Cricket competitions and currently working in partnership with local schools to organise winter training.
We fielded competitive teams at under 10, under 11, under 13, under 15 and under 17, and all performed well with the under 13’s becoming county champions and winning the Gauntlett Trophy. The under 11’s narrowly missed out on a semi final place due to key games being washed out ; two last ball defeats deprived the under 15’s of a semi final place. The under 17’s had won 3 games out of 5 before the August monsoon wiped out remaining fixtures. Our senior sides offer a range of standards to enable youngsters to gain confidence as they progress to higher levels, the senior players in these teams take pride in supporting and encouraging them throughout this transition.
‘In 8 years of being involved in boys' sports this has been the best organised season by far.’
Just one of many comments received in response to our end of season questionnaire which was completed by more than half our junior members.
Members were asked to rate a number of features out of 5: their ratings are shown below. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, although not universally so, and we have had plenty of constructive suggestions to make things even better next season. A massive 98% of respondents said they would rejoin next season, and a similar number want us to organise winter indoor training.

Some of the things people said they’d like to see for next year: more matches including inter club tournament, increased individual skills coaching, less rain, smaller groups for the youngest players, keep dogs off the field, training in the winter !
