Roundup of 2008 Season

Cumnor finished a very creditable joint 2nd in the Cherwell League Division 1 after the last game of the season ended in a washout and so missed out on promotion to the Home Counties League by just 11 points. The club featured in many headlines in the Oxford Mail throughout the season.

Some of the most spectacular results came in the NPower Village Knockout where Cumnor reached the last 16 and should really have progressed further. You can read some of the reports from the Oxford Mail here: Cumnor's Dramatic Victory, Captains Reflect on Final, Cumnor Call for County Support and in the 5th round and our first home game of the competition It's a Cruise for Cumnor before the bitter taste of defeat with the last 8 beckoning, Cumnor Hopes Ended. Watch out for further progress in 2009!

Cumnor retained the Great Tew Six-a-Side title after a tense and thrilling final against Banbury on bank holiday Monday. Having swept aside Oxford Downs in the semi final (how we would have preferred the league win on Saturday and given this one up!) Cumnor batted first against a strong Banbury side featuring Oxfordshire spinners Luke Ryan and Jimmy Phillips and rattled up an impressive 76 in their 5 overs - thanks to some typical batting from Ali Morteza including one massive reverse 6 plus intelligent hitting and running from the impressive Andrew Robertson. In reply Banbury began aggressively and took 16 from Ayaz Khans' over then 20 from Sam Jones over. The next 2 overs from Umair Ghazali and Ali Morteza also leaked runs and with just 12 needed from the last over up stepped occasional bowler James Nielsen. This final over yielded more dot balls than any other bowled in the entire competition, and with 2 balls left Banbury still needed 8 to win. A towering shot to long off was caught just 1 inch from the ground by the magnificent Ali and the trophy was retained! Well done lads and well skippered Robbo.
